Quit India Movement and Gandhiji
Quit India Movement was an important phase of the Indian freedom struggle. This movement started in 1942 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Its objective was to demand immediate independence of India from British rule. During this movement, Gandhiji gave a clear call to the British to leave India.
The political conditions of India were very difficult during the Second World War. There was a growing feeling among Indian leaders and people that India should have the right to decide its own future. In this situation, Congress passed the resolution of Quit India Movement in 1942.
In the session held in Mumbai on 8 August 1942, Gandhiji inspired the people to struggle. He called upon the people to continue the fight for freedom with courage and discipline. His famous message was—“Do or die.”
As soon as the movement started, the British government arrested many prominent leaders including Gandhiji. Despite the arrest of the leaders, the movement spread to different parts of the country. Students, youth, women and common citizens participated in the movement in their own ways.
The British government took drastic steps to suppress the movement. Many people were arrested and repressed in many places. Despite this, the spirit of independence in India did not weaken.
The Quit India Movement played an important role in convincing the British government that it would not be easy to rule India for a long time. Although India gained independence in 1947, the movement of 1942 proved to be an important milestone in the final path towards independence.
This movement under the leadership of Gandhiji is an example of the fact that when people unite for a purpose, the power of change increases greatly. Quit India Movement is still considered a proud chapter of the country's independence history.
