Gandhiji and social reform
Mahatma Gandhi was not only a freedom fighter but also a social reformer. He believed that India should be free from social evils along with political freedom. He raised his voice against untouchability, discrimination, inequality and social injustice in his life.
Gandhiji considered untouchability a serious problem for the society. He worked continuously for the respect and rights of the Dalit community. He wanted that no person should be discriminated against on the basis of birth or caste in the society. He appealed to give respect to such people and treat them equally.
Gandhiji also considered cleanliness as an important part of social reform. He himself participated in cleaning works and inspired people to keep a clean environment. According to him, cleanliness is not only the responsibility of the government but the duty of every citizen.
He also encouraged women's participation in the freedom movement. Many women joined their movements and became active in public life. Gandhiji believed that the progress of society is not possible without equal participation of women.
Gandhiji was a supporter of religious tolerance and community unity. He wanted love and respect among people of different religions. He believed that religion should lead a person towards humanity and morality, and not create hatred among people.
The aim of Gandhiji's social reforms was not just to change laws. He wanted to change people's thinking. He believed that permanent change would come in the society only when the individual would change his own behaviour.
Even today issues like social equality, cleanliness, women empowerment and religious harmony are important. Gandhiji's ideas of social reform remind us that economic development alone is not enough for a strong nation. Respect, equality and humanity are also necessary in the society.
