Dandi March and Salt Satyagraha
The Dandi March carried out by Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most famous events of the Indian independence movement. This movement was started in protest against the salt law of the British government. At that time the British government had established control over the production and sale of salt and Indians also had to pay tax on their salt.
Gandhiji chose salt as the subject of the movement because salt was needed by every person. Everyone, poor and rich, used it. In this way, opposition to the Salt Law became an effective medium to connect the general public with the freedom movement.
On March 12, 1930, Gandhiji started his march from Sabarmati Ashram towards Dandi. Initially there were a limited number of Satyagrahis with him. This journey of about 390 kilometers lasted for several days. Many people joined him on the way and became aware of the freedom movement.
On 6 April 1930, Gandhiji reached Dandi and symbolically violated the Salt Law by making salt on the sea shore. After this, people started agitation against the salt law in many parts of the country. This movement was known as Salt Satyagraha.
The specialty of Dandi March was that it was a completely peaceful movement. Gandhiji appealed to the people to maintain discipline and stay away from violence. This movement attracted the attention of people in India as well as internationally.
Dandi March showed that a major political struggle does not require only weapons. Issues related to common life can also be made an effective medium of movement. Gandhiji linked a small issue like salt to the larger struggle for national independence.
Today the Dandi March is considered a symbol of Gandhiji's strategy, leadership and power of non-violence. This is an important example of public participation and peaceful resistance in Indian history.
