Biography of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was a great Indian freedom fighter, social reformer, and a proponent of non-violence. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the *Diwan* (chief administrator) of the princely state of Rajkot, and his mother, Putlibai, was a deeply religious woman. The values instilled by his mother had a profound influence on Gandhi's life.
Gandhi received his early education in India and traveled to England for further studies. He studied law and became a barrister. Subsequently, he went to South Africa, where he faced racial discrimination. This experience altered the course of his life; he began to fight against injustice through the principles of truth and non-violence.
Upon returning to India, Gandhi joined the Indian freedom movement. He understood the struggles faced by farmers, laborers, and the common people. He played a pivotal role in numerous movements, such as the Champaran Satyagraha, the Kheda Movement, the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, and the Quit India Movement.
Gandhi believed that even the gravest injustices could be overcome through truth and non-violence. He emphasized the use of *Swadeshi* (indigenous) goods, self-reliance, cleanliness, and social equality. He was opposed to untouchability and raised his voice for the rights of the weaker sections of society.
Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Although he is no longer among us, his ideals continue to guide the world toward the path of truth, non-violence, peace, and humanity. His life teaches us that courage, patience, and truthfulness are essential for bringing about great change.
